Home Inspiration / Bright & Open Kitchen Shelving

I'm in love with bright and airy kitchens! I've been keeping this in mind while N and I look for a place to live in Austin.  My main goal is to find a place that has lots of natural light that reaches into the kitchen area.  I can see myself making a yummy breakfast in the beautiful morning light!

What about you?  Do you prefer to wake up bright or do you prefer dark, moodier mornings?

Get Smitten Over… My Current Loves

Right now I am sitting in my office looking out at the snow.  We don't get a ton of snow here, just some, just enough so that it hasn't lost its romanticism to the fact that snow can actually get in the way of things… but regardless of all that, the gray skies have me thinking of color and quirky decor and a few things I want for spring.

01. One Love Organics Skin Savior - I have heard nothing but good things about this and I love that it is organic.  I have become such a skincare nut over the past few months and I am on the hunt for great, natural skincare.

02. Julia Kostreva iPhone case - I have had my eye on this iPhone case for a while.  In fact, I have been wanting to pick up a few things from this wonderful designer, like this planner (swoon!).  Right now I am just waiting for my phone contract to be up so that I can upgrade.

03. Orvis Stripe Tee - One can never have too many striped tees, and I just really like the look of this one, the asymmetrical hem and all.

04. Baggu Zip Pouch - I have been toting my Madewell tote everywhere because it's so versatile but the downside is that I am constantly losing things in the bottom.  A little pouch like this would be a great way to corral all my little things.

05. Union Jack Pillow - I saw a pillow like this in a picture of a truly killer office and I haven't forgotten it since.  Sometimes there is just that one thing that you think you need, that piece that is perfect, even if it doesn't make sense.  This is that for me.

06. L'Oreal Nailpolish in Blue Reef - I just love this color, even if I can only seem to find it on UK sites!

07. Duck Mirror - Just really, how is this not the best thing ever?  I think I saw it on Design Love Fest a while back and I just can't get enough.

08. Sam Edelman Sneakers - These makes me want to wear them everywhere, everyday.

09. Eiffel Armchair - My interior design teacher in college instilled a deep rooted love for this beautiful design.  Of course I would love a real one but for the price, this baby would be just perfect in my office.

What about you?  What do you love right now?

New Office, New Prints

I am in the process of re-doing my office.  I have been spending more and more time here (and less time working from my bed - productive!) and so I feel like it would be worth a small investment to make it a place that inspires me.

I love all aspects of decorating, from planning to picking out furniture, painting, and all the rest.  The thing about picking out prints for my wall is…I love it the most.  I don't play around with the big stuff, furniture and things, because I want to stick to something classic and sturdy.  The walls are where it's at.  I can switch it up, make it crazy, or tone it down.  And honestly, while I love the freedom to change my mind, I usually fall in love with certain pieces and can't bear to change them out.

But anyway.  This is the first house where I have had a room solely dedicated to being an office (and no, we haven't moved, it has literally just taken me 7 months to get to this point). I know that I want the place to be inspiring, calm, and a little quirky. I spent the better part of the weekend looking for prints for my wall that would encompass that and I'd like to share a few of my favorites with y'all.

And I tried to stick to prints that I wanted for my office (and that were affordable - save for the darling print, but gosh!) but I couldn't help myself and I found a few I'd like for other rooms as well. Oh well, I am a sucker for those cutesy, I-love-the-person-I-am-sharing-this-all-with-and-this-says-that-just-perfectly, prints.

I really like words, you might have surmised.  I am still looking for some photographs or illustrations, something to break it all up, maybe with a pop of color.

Where do you get your prints? Do you have a favorite etsy seller I should check out?  I love to know.

Fall Favorites for the Home

I work in an office that is literally next door to Target.  Like walking distance, yes.  To me, this seems to be both the best and worst thing could happen.  I can walk to Target for a shop break on my lunch, buuuut I now go to Target exponentially more than I used to.  And my resolve weakens every time.  I am positive of it.

I already talked about the clothes that I just couldn't get enough of so today is dedicated to my home.  As much as I love Target for their style picks, I love them even more for their home decor.  And rightly so, just take a look!

How do you decorate for fall?  What are you obsessed with?  Is anyone else in love with foxes too?

Oh and it's Wednesday!  Only a few more days until the weekend.  We've go this :)

Home Goodies

I am always decorating my home in some way or another.  And fall is the season that screams renewal for me (ya know, like spring!).  During the fall I love to switch out a few pieces and right now I am wanting a lot of black & white, gold and brass, and a few earthy touches.

I'll be back tomorrow with some of my favorite shops (that include some of these goodies below) but for now, here are some things that I am pining for.  Or, more likely, am pining to DIY.

And second on the agenda is a little introduction to the lovely Cece from Pink Sunshine.  She is sponsoring me this month and her blog is just wonderful!  Go see for yourself.

Thursdays on the Inside!

Is it just me or does anyone else ever get the desire to just start all over?!  And we're talking decorating here so keep up, lovelies.  Sometimes I get a wild hair and just want to throw everything out!  Pull all my furniture out onto my lawn and announce the world's most impromptu yard sale to all my neighbors.  And of course, they'll all venture out to see about the commotion and they'll think that 'wow, this is neat!' and buy my stuff because dreams aren't made of failed attempts and half-a jobs, no sir!  In my dreams that stuff moves, and it moves fast.  And I am left with a few benjamins and I walk my happy self to ikea and to west elm and thrive and where ever else I am feeling because thats where this all started, with this feeling that I wanted to start over.

And when I wake up and realize that no, that's not reality, I just search for places that look like the place I would create if dreams came true, ya know?

And by the way, I'm bringing back Thursdays on the Inside for today because those posts were fun and you know it!

Home-y Things I'd Like to Decorate With...

Oh me, oh my!  A second round up for the week, and we're only on Tuesday.  How's that for taking the easy way out, huh?

But really, this IS what I wanted to talk about because this is what I love.  I have an abnormal (abby normal! anyone else love mel brooks?) interest in decorating our place so these little round up posts, they're just gonna continue.  And this one couldn't come at a better time because we're going to Austin in just a few short days, which means I won't be stuck in good old Lubbs for the weekend and will have access to other stores.  I love good 'ole Target, don't get me wrong, but a gal needs some variety.  It's the spice of life, come on!

But, as we were...

Also, let the fact that there are no less than three pillows featured here be a testament to my commitment to comfort.  We don't play around over here.  An abundance of pillows and blankets at all times.  Or else. Or else, I tell ya!

Thursdays on the Inside: On the Outside

See what I did there?  This week I ran across so many beautiful exterior photos that I had to post them this week. Feast your eyes, lovelies...

A Little Sneak Peak...

Hello everyone.  Ive been out for a few days being busy with work and unpacking and decorating, of course.  Mostly decorating if we're being honest.  And let me tell you guys, I love our new home.  It's small and cozy but surprisingly spacious enough for our accumulated furniture and odds and ends.  We are slowly settling into a routine and hoping our dogs will do the same (they are exploring like crazy, still).  And still, with all this going on, we seem to find ourselves with a new family member... a cat.  Ill talk about him more later but for now he's getting along wonderfully with the pups.

Aside from all things moving related, I am vey excited about April!  This next month ushers in lots of new things for the blog!  Maybe things like outfit posts, a home tour, and a few other things... but for now Id like to leave you with a little sneak peak into our new home.  Its not ready for the big reveal but its already starting to take shape and feel like home.

Happy Wednesday guys!

Thursdays on the Inside: Bedrooms

This week we're seeing bedrooms.  And I suppose that it is a bit ironic that the week I feature beds is in fact the same week that actual sleeping seems to be eluding me.  I have been keeping uncharacteristic work hours that have been kicking my butt, if we're being honest.  But that is all over come Friday.  Thank all that is good!  And then I will be burying myself under a fluffy duvet - hibernation style.

Thursdays On The Inside

I really am a home junkie.  I love everything from dishes to carpets, from light fixtures to baseboards to paint, from cutting boards to bookshelves and everything else you can imagine.  And what I really love is the artistic culmination of all these things into a whole that we lovingly call a home.  So in leu of this, I introduce Thursdays on the Inside: a celebration of home decor and all that it entails.

For today, I present you with kitchens.  Oh the glorious kitchen, the room that may be the most beautiful room in the house.  Feast your eyes...

The Living Room: Basics & Frills

In a few months Nick and I will be moving into a new place!  I'm pretty ecstatic to say the least - a little because we are actually moving but mostly because it's new and different and it is filled with bare, white walls, uncovered windows, and lonely cabinets all waiting to be livened up with the stuff that makes a house a home.  Ahh, my heart flutters just imagining it.

But let us come back down to earth now, I've got things to get done.  Seeing as Nick and I are combining our things we have discussed furniture and we will be using my living room things since they are of the newer, non 1980s, variety.  Which is good because I planned on loosing that floral couch somewhere between here and there - but y'all didn't hear anything.

So I decided to make a few mood boards (and I'll be doing this for other rooms as well) that show the basics and the frills.  These are mostly the things that I had when I lived in my little one bedroom, plus a few things I plan on getting to help us grow into a larger space.

The Basics: Living Room
Antique Bronze Clock - Target, Khaki Sofa - Sams, Large Milk Crate - Target, Adjustable Floor Lamp - Target, Tear Drop Lamp Base (Target in stores), Industrial Coffee Table - Urban Outfitters, Jute Rug - Target, Ladder Bookshelf - Target, Leather Club Chairs - Target

The basics are just that - basic.  I stayed with a neutral palette so that the "bones" of the room would stand the test of time and provide a solid starting point for a variety of styles.  As we get older, I'm sure our taste's will change and these pieces will allow us that luxury.

The Frills: Living Room

Plaid Throw - Target,  Side Table - Urban Outfitters, Floral Curtain - Target, Velvet Pillow - Pier 1, Lamp Shade - Target, Tulips, Basket - Target, Captain's Mirror - Target

Oh and the frills.  The fun part of the post.  I love anything and everything and therefor pinpointing a style is pretty difficult for me.  I like I hint of industrial and a splash of vintage with some natural glam for good measure.  But really, my living room has always been a big collection of colors and styles and it has always made me feel good.  And that's the point isn't it?

What do you guys think?  Do you use this same school of thought when decorating your homes? Why or why not?

When You're a Desk Snob

If you're anything like me then you put extensive thought into desk accessories.  It's like decorating an entire room - but its just my desk.  Lovely.  But I'm okay with it if you are!  Seeing as I am moving soon I see an opportunity to re-decorate and here are some of the things that I am loving.

Beating the Apartment Chubb

Hannah + Dani

Just like I am on a mission to make myself into an overall healthier person I have a desire to pare down the things I have and get my apartment to shed a few excess pounds as well.  This is my goal for July.

We all know the forumla for losing weight: what goes out has to exceed what is coming in.  That is the only way that you can get rid of excess whether it be actual weight or clutter in your home.  In my case, I am really good at getting rid of things, usually.  I am always cleaning out my closet since it's basically a stress management technique, cleaning out and organizing relaxes me.  Since I get rid of things all the time you would think that my clutter would be kept to a minimum but alas it is not.  For the longest time I had no idea why.  It wasn't until I started reading lifestyle blogs that I really got the point: I was bringing in more stuff than I was letting go.  Plain and simple.

At first I didn't do much.  The idea of putting my home on a "diet" was intriguing but not something that I ever put my full effort into so in return I never got much out of it.  I would clean out my stuff with a judgmental eye (and at a time when I was feeling rather un-sentimental) and it would be great, invigorating, and inspiring.  Getting rid of the things that I really don't need and are just there in excess really makes me feel lighter.  But next thing I knew I was swimming in clothes, shoes, and magazines with bits of pieces of things in between and I was completely stressed out by my overwhelming amount of stuff that I didn't need.  My apartment was yo-yo dieting.

What turned me around and got me to thinking seriously was this post by the Closet Therapist.  (Don't you love it when something that someone else writes speaks directly to you!).  This was exactly how I felt.  It was about creating a simpler life and being the true, authentic you.  It is real because it is not saying to deny yourself your wants in lieu of being a simpler person but rather do not let them define you and don't be reliant on them.  I have always felt like I had an excess of "stuff" so I deemed this my biggest hurdle in starting to create a simpler life.

For me, all this starts at home.  It is a place that I recharge, where I am most comfortable, and where all my things reside.  It is the place that I start and end my days (mostly).  So that's where I want to start.  This goal is two-fold.  My two for one challenge.

For the month of July I want to get rid of at least 100 things while at the same time refraining from any unnecessary shopping*.  This will help me in my paring down goal as well as helping me to curb my shopping habit (and when I say habit, I mean it, it can get bad). And hey, that means more money that can be put into my savings this month, another perk!

This is all a part of re inventing my life, making it much simpler and less fussy.

* For the sake of keeping me honest (and not rationalizing a pair of killer heels as necessities) I define necessary purchases to be groceries (I still need to eat - although fast food is unnecessary so that goes), gas (I drive everywhere), the occasional necessary clothing item (as in I bought a pair of khaki trousers yesterday because my previous pair ripped through in the butt and that was the only pair I owned AND those are the color pants required at work)
